Job vacancies in The Bell's kitchen - We have two vacancies in the kitchen for a Chef de Partie and a Commis Chef. Candidates must be used to working with fresh, seasonal produce and be willing to work 5 days of split shifts per week. We offer a competitive and flexible package including live-in accommodation if required. Our kitchen is a busy, exciting and highly professional environment. Chef secondment from the USA - We are delighted to welcome chef Justin Congdon on secondment from ‘The Point’, a five star luxury hotel and resort at Saranac Lake, New York. The Point’s Executive Chef, Mark Levy, was originally from Stanford (...le Hope not California)... and previously worked at The Bell. He is enjoying the work experience but the kitchen here was a big change for Justin. The Bell has 11 chefs in the brigade and serves about 110 covers /night. The Point is very exclusive with 6 in the kitchen and serving a max. of 25 / night. Undeterred, Justin is having a great time especially enjoying the Essex night life with the lads from The Bell –which, looking at the pictures at www.thepointresort.com, must be quite an eye-opener!
Hanging the bun! Join us at 1pm in the bar on Good Friday for the 'hanging of the bun ceremony.' This year we are delighted to announce that the Reverand Max Blake will be doing the honours. Hot cross buns for all afterwards - perfect with a pint of Brewer's Gold or a glass of Chenin blanc!

Exciting news at The Bell - We are absolutely delighted to announce that we have acquired High House, a grade 2 listed building on the High Street, next door to Hill House. We are so excited to have the opportunity to restore this lovely old building and make it available to our guests. We have ambitious plans - dreams even! It will be a big project but ultimately a fantastic addition to what we can offer at The Bell. Bell Chef Garrett places 6th at the International Rotisseurs Competition! Our very own Garrett Keown represented Great Britain in September at the prestigious International Rotisseurs Competition in Istanbul. Competing against 24 other national winners, Garrett performed superbly to come 6th. You can see Garrett's delicious menu here.

Well done Garret! - The Bell's Garret Keown scoops top accolade as Chaîne des Rôtisseurs announces Winner of the 2011 Young Chef of the Year Awards. Garret took on 7 other finalists at London’s Westminster Kingsway on the 17th March, and won the coveted title of Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Young Chef of the Year 2011. Garret "stunned" the illustrious panel of judges with his outstanding creativity, flair and presentation skills (see pics of his dishes here). He will now have the honour of representing Great Britain against other national winners at the International Rôtisseurs competition, which takes place in Istanbul in September. Chefs invited to represent England at 'Meals from the Masters' event in Delaware - Head chef Stuart Fay and Senior Sous chef Stephen Treadwell have been invited to cook at the prestigious 'Meals from the Masters' charity event in Wilmington, Delaware on April 17th. Stuart and Stephen will be flown out to the states by Bank of America, the event sponsors and, along with 30 other world class chefs, will be preparing their own special tasting menu for the event which will have over 1,000 guests attending. More updates will follow and, at some point, we will let you know the content of Stuart and Stephen's very secret menu... (apparently we are not allowed to spill the beans just yet.)
Bell voted one of 10 best Gastropubs in Britain- In October 2010 The Sunday Times (in association with Harden's) announced its annual 'Food List' which it described as the "definitive list of Britain's Top 200 restaurants."
We were gratified to make the top 200; extremely pleased to also make the top 10 restaurants in the East of England... and absolutely ecstatic to be voted one of the top 10 Gastropubs in the whole country.
